Reasons You Might Need an In-Office Ultrasound

Most people associate ultrasounds exclusively with pregnancy, but, in reality, most women only have one ultrasound at around 18-22 weeks gestation. There are, however, a number of other reasons you might need an ultrasound to evaluate your reproductive system health.
At Modern OBGYN Care, dedicated board-certified OB/GYNs Dr. Miguel Torres and Dr. Marcela Torres understand how important it is to get quick, clear answers when you have worrying symptoms. That's why we perform ultrasounds in Pembroke Pines, Florida. No need for hospital referrals, and no long waits for answers!
In this blog, we're discussing some of the different reasons our doctors may recommend this safe, noninvasive imaging test.
Pelvic pain and pressure
Many women experience cramps during their periods, however, normal cramps aren't debilitating and usually go away within a few days.
If you have severe pelvic pain and pressure during your periods (or outside of them,) our doctors might recommend an ultrasound to check for causes such as fibroids, endometriosis, or ovarian cysts.
Irregular periods
A normal menstrual cycle is 21-35 days, with periods generally lasting two to seven days. Some variation isn't unusual, however, if your cycle length frequently varies seven days or more, it's considered irregular.
This may occur due to hormone imbalance, structural issues, or other reasons. An ultrasound examines the uterus and ovaries to check for fibroids, polyps, or other growths that cause the cycle disruption.
Heavy bleeding
Some of the indicators of too-heavy menstrual bleeding are:
- Needing to change tampons or pads after fewer than two hours
- Doubling up on products (like a tampon plus a pad)
- Waking up during the night to replace a pad or a tampon
- Large blood clots (quarter-sized or bigger)
These issues may occur when you have fibroids, polyps, or other reproductive health issues. An ultrasound can help your doctor assess these problems and make a diagnosis.
Fertility issues
If you're trying to get pregnant but haven't been able to conceive after 12 months or trying (or six months if you're over 35), an ultrasound is often the first step in fertility evaluations.
The ultrasound can visualize the uterus, ovaries, and Fallopian tubes to detect possible problems, from structural abnormalities to low ovarian reserves and beyond.
