Pelvic Pain in the New Year: Common Causes and When to See Your OB/GYN
Around 25 million Americans struggle with chronic pelvic pain today. It's one of the most common reasons patients visit experienced OB/GYNs Dr. Miguel Torres and Dr. Marcela Torres
at Modern OBGYN Care in Pembroke Pines, Florida.
Our team is passionate about sharing both education and solutions, so we felt that January was the perfect time to discuss the common causes of pelvic pain and when it’s time to visit your OB/GYN.
Defining chronic pelvic pain
Chronic pelvic pain can refer to any mild, moderate, or severe pain centered in the pelvic area. This type of pain can occur anywhere from just under the navel down to the genitals. The pain can truly be different for everyone. It may feel like:
- Pressure
- Cramping
- Pulling
- Twisting
- Burning
- Stabbing
For many women, pelvic pain is sporadic, but others struggle daily. Regardless of when it happens or how long it lasts, if you’ve been dealing with pelvic pain for a while, it’s time to consider seeing a doctor.
When to see your OB/GYN for pelvic pain
Many women assume that pelvic pain is just part of their menstrual cycle or that it’s simply a burden they must bear as a woman. That simply isn’t true. Pelvic pain isn’t normal, particularly when it lingers for months or years.
In general, if you have persistent pelvic pain that’s growing worse or preventing you from regular activities, it’s time to get help. It’s particularly important to reach out for help if your pelvic pain happens alongside other symptoms, for example, unusually heavy bleeding, fever, severe bloating, or extreme fatigue.
The American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists (ACOG) explains that chronic pelvic pain lasts six months or longer. But, you don’t have to wait that long to seek help. Our caring OB/GYNs can work with you to detect the source of your pain as early as possible, so you need not suffer any longer.
Common gynecologic causes of pelvic pain
At Modern OBGYN Care, our OB/GYNs treat all types of chronic pelvic pain caused by gynecologic issues. A few of the most common causes are:
- Endometriosis: Pain from uterine tissue outside the uterus
- Fibroids: Growths inside the uterus causing pressure or pain
- Ovarian cysts: Small fluid-filled sacs on the ovaries that can trigger pain
- Pelvic inflammatory disease: Reproductive organ infections causing pain
Some causes of chronic pelvic pain, for example, urinary tract infections, aren’t gynecologic, but they can closely mimic gynecologic pain. That’s why it’s crucial to schedule a comprehensive exam with one of our experienced OB/GYNs.
Our experts combine high-level expertise, advanced diagnostic tools, and gentle exams to pinpoint the underlying cause of your pelvic pain. We offer a full range of treatments for chronic pelvic pain, including medication, lifestyle support, minimally invasive procedures, and other evidence-based approaches to help ensure you enjoy the quality of life you deserve.
