Your First Well-Woman Exam of the Year: What to Expect and Why It Matters

Your First Well-Woman Exam of the Year: What to Expect and Why It Matters

Roughly 90% of women understand how important well-woman exams are, yet four in 10 women have skipped or delayed necessary tests. At Modern OBGYN Care in Pembroke Pines, Florida, our caring team, led by Dr. Miguel Torres and Dr. Marcela Torres, makes well-woman exams convenient and easy.

January is a great time to discuss your first well-woman exam of the year. Read on to find out what you can expect and why it matters.

What happens during a well-woman exam?

At Modern OBGYN Care, our doctors are big believers in tailoring patient care for individual needs. This means that every well-woman exam may be a little different based on general health, age, stage of life, and lifestyle. Here are the main aspects of most exams.

Vital signs

To start your visit, our specialists check your height, weight, blood pressure, and body mass index (BMI).

Comprehensive health history

Your comprehensive health history includes questions about current and past medications and procedures, past pregnancies, sexual activity, and more. This review helps us identify risk factors and determine what tests you may need.

Dr. Torres also reviews your vaccines and recommends updates as needed, including HPV, influenza, Tdap, and COVID-19.

Pelvic exam

Most women have a pelvic exam that evaluates reproductive organs, including the vulva, vagina, cervix, uterus, and ovaries. However, younger girls usually don’t need an internal pelvic exam during their first well-woman visit at age 13-15.

Our OB/GYNs at Modern OBGYN Care use gentle methods focused on your comfort.

Cervical cancer screening

A Pap or HPV test screens for cervical cancer and precancerous changes. This usually happens alongside your pelvic exam. You don’t need Pap tests at every well-woman exam.

Most women start Pap or HPV testing at age 21 and continue until age 65. Frequency is usually every three to five years. This can vary based on your prior results and health concerns.

Sexually transmitted disease (STD) screening

Our doctors may recommend screening for STDs such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, and syphilis.

The recommended tests depend on your age, STD risk factors, and sexual history. If you’re pregnant at your well-woman exam, you’ll also need certain routine STD screening tests.

Breast exam and screening discussion

You may need a clinical breast exam, and potentially, a mammogram. ACOG recommends mammograms for women 40 and older who are at average risk of breast cancer.

Our OB/GYNs provide personalized mammogram recommendations.

Personal health counseling and support

Your well-woman visit is a great opportunity to discuss many aspects of your health.

Our experienced physicians can help guide you in any stage of life, whether you need help with birth control, mental health concerns, sexual health issues, menopause management, or another aspect of your health and wellness.

Why are well-woman exams so important?

Well-woman exams aren’t just about reproductive health; they’re about helping you feel and be your best. They’re about helping you avoid preventable women’s health problems.

Using the preventive approach,  women’s wellness exams can ultimately save you money, give you more quality time, and maybe even save your life.
