Top Reasons Why You Should Consider STD Testing

Top Reasons Why You Should Consider STD Testing

It isn’t always easy to talk about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), but the reality is that they’re common. Testing can help you get the peace of mind you need as well as access to the right treatment — and STD testing is available here at Modern OBGYN in Miramar, Florida.

Take a moment as board-certified OBGYNs Marcela Torres, MD, and Miguel Torres, MD highlight the top eight reasons why (and when!) you should consider STD testing.

1. Many infections are asymptomatic

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than one million STDs are diagnosed each day around the world.  Unfortunately, many of these are asymptomatic, which means it’s possible to unintentionally spread STDs.

Getting tested means that you can detect any asymptomatic STDs and get the treatment you need.

2. Testing leads to early detection

By getting tested regularly, you can catch any infections early when they are most treatable. Early detection means you can start treatment sooner, which then reduces your risk of complications.

3. Testing protects your health

STDs don’t just impact your reproductive health; they can affect your physical and mental health as well. Untreated STDs can lead to serious health complications, including infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, increased risk of depression, and increased risk of certain cancers.

Regular testing helps you stay ahead of any potential issues and reduces your risk of complications associated with untreated STDs.

4. Testing protects your partner’s health

Regular STD testing shows you care about your partner's health. It helps you avoid unknowingly transmitting infections.

If you do need to tell your partner about an STD, don’t delay the conversation. Choose a quiet, private setting and be open. Try to remain calm, and keep in mind that they may want to process for a few minutes before diving into the conversation.

5. Testing protects your baby’s health

Untreated STDs can lead to serious complications for pregnant women,  such as preterm labor, low birth weight, and transmission of the infection to your baby during childbirth. STD testing is recommended as part of your routine prenatal care.

If any infections are detected, you can get started with the right treatment before your baby is born.

6. Testing is easy and confidential

It isn’t uncommon to feel awkward talking about STDs, but remember that STD testing is confidential and straightforward. Depending on which STDs are suspected, you may benefit from a swab, a urine sample, or a blood test.

7. Testing gives you peace of mind

STD testing can alleviate any worries or doubts you might have about your sexual health. Worrying about whether you have an STD can take a toll on your mental wellness. Testing means that you can know for sure — and that gives you peace of mind.

8. Testing can rule out other conditions

Many gynecologic conditions share the same symptoms. Itching, burning, pain, and discharge could be a sign of an STD, but it can also indicate a yeast infection. STD testing helps to confirm the source of your symptoms, so you can get the right treatment.

When should you get tested for STDs?

Now that we’ve covered all of the reasons why you should consider STD testing, let’s talk about when you should get tested. Our team follows the screening recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
