October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month: 3 Ways to Be Proactive About Your Health

Every October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a powerful reminder to take control of your well-being. At Modern OBGYN Care in Pembroke Pines, Florida, Dr. Miguel Torres and Dr. Marcela Torres offer personalized obstetrics and gynecology care that makes patients feel supported and valued like family.

We understand that thinking and talking about the possibility of breast cancer isn't anyone's favorite thing to do. It is, however, an important thing to do because a few simple steps could literally save your life.

Our team remains by your side in helping you take charge of your health, each step of the way.

Here are three ways to be proactive during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Schedule your well-woman exam

Your annual well-woman exam is more than just a routine checkup. It gives our experienced OB/GYNs a chance to review your medical history, perform a breast and pelvic exam, and detect any changes early.

If something feels off, for example, if you've noticed a lump in your breast or have pelvic pain or new vaginal discharge, you can bring it up during your exam (although we prefer if you reach out right away)!

Your well-woman exam is also an opportunity to discuss your lifestyle, health goals, birth control, and any other concerns you’d like to express. This exam is the foundation for preventive health.

Learn about your risk factors

Understanding your breast cancer risk can guide how early and how often you need screening. Our OB/GYNs evaluate all women for breast cancer risk factors, and this assessment is usually part of your well-woman visit. Some of the key risk factors are:

If you’re part of a higher-than-average risk group, you may need screenings earlier or more often and possibly additional tests beyond standard mammography, which brings us to the third key step in your proactive plan.

Schedule your mammogram

Recent guidance from the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), finalized in 2024, recommends that women at average risk begin mammogram screening every other year starting at age 40 and continuing through age 74. Women with higher risk factors may need to start earlier or have additional imaging.

The USPSTF also notes that for women 75 and older, there isn't sufficient evidence to make a general recommendation. It's a decision you'll make with your doctor at Modern OBGYN Care.

These are only general guidelines, so it's important to understand that your doctor may recommend earlier or more frequent mammograms based on your unique risk factors.

This month, why not give yourself the peace of mind that comes from thorough, attentive women's wellness care? Call our office at 754-217-4181 to schedule a visit with one of our caring OB/GYNs.
